Nigeria Targets 200 Telecom Towers by December, Plans New Satellite Beyond Fibre Coverage
The Federal Government is accelerating plans to activate at least 200 telecommunications towers in underserved communities by December under NUCAP, alongside deploying a dedicated satellite network via NIGCOMSAT.

The Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy has outlined aggressive targets to bridge Nigeria’s final-mile connectivity divide, announcing that at least 200 new telecommunications towers will go live across unconnected rural clusters before December 2026.
Speaking on active digital infrastructure milestones, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, noted that the rollouts form the operational core of the National Unconnected Communities Access Programme (NUCAP), which targets roughly 3,700 sites nationwide. Following initial deployment milestones at Kura village near Abuja and expansion into Niger Delta communities, each functional tower is engineered to service population blocks ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 residents.
Full realization of the phase-one target is projected to bring over 20 million previously unserved Nigerians into formal digital economic loops. Recognizing geographic limits inherent in terrestrial fibre and mast rollouts, the government has finalized framework parameters with the Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) to deploy a dedicated orbital asset for terrain unreachable by ground infrastructure.
Industry analysts view the dual-track strategy as a vital multiplier for fintech adoption, agricultural extension telemetry, and remote SME participation. With the ICT sector targeted to scale its GDP contribution toward 25 percent over the medium term, expanding reliable backhaul and last-mile reach remains foundational to equitable digital wealth distribution.
