Veteran Nollywood Icon Olu Jacobs Passes Away at 84
Legendary Nollywood actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs (MFR), widely celebrated as the godfather of Nigerian cinema and "The Lion of Lufodo," has died at the age of 84.

The Nigerian entertainment industry has lost one of its most towering and foundational figures following the passing of veteran actor Olu Jacobs. His death was announced on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, in a joint family statement shared by his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, and their son, Olusoji Jacobs.
Remembered affectionately by family and fans as "The Lion of Lufodo," the statement noted: "It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle." The family has requested privacy from bloggers and social media influencers as they mourn.
Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs enjoyed a stellar career spanning more than five decades. After training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, he cut his teeth in British television and international productions before returning to Nigeria to help lay the bedrock of modern Nollywood. Known for his unmatched commanding screen presence, distinctive baritone voice, and versatile performances, he earned numerous accolades, including the Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Actor and the Industry Merit Award at the AMVCA. In 2011, he was honored by the Federal Government as a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
In recent years, Jacobs stepped back from the public eye while managing Lewy body dementia, supported closely by his wife and family. His immense legacy as an actor, mentor, and co-founder of the Lufodo Group remains deeply woven into the fabric of African storytelling.
