Federal Government Categorically Rejects Allegations of Backing Failed Niger Coup

The Federal Government has issued a strong and definitive denial regarding online claims alleging that Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) backed a failed military power seizure in the Niger Republic.

Official Response

Through an official statement released by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye, the administration labeled the circulating social media reports and videos as entirely false, malicious, and designed to mislead the public. The government underscored that Nigeria remains a staunch defender of constitutional order and will never endorse or condone unconstitutional changes of government anywhere.

Reaffirming Regional Stance

Reiterating its foreign policy objectives, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Nigeria shares deep historical, cultural, and fraternal ties with Niger, desiring only long-term peace, security, and regional stability.

Commitment to Democracy: The federal administration reaffirmed its dedication to the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance alongside the African Union's zero-tolerance policy towards unconstitutional regimes.

Call for Vigilance: Authorities have urged the public, both at home and abroad, to disregard unverified online narratives and digital content aimed at sowing discord and straining diplomatic relations within the sub-region.
